Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

William Blake was born in Soho in 1757 and lived in London all of his life, with the exception of three years spent in Bognor Regis. In 1772 Blake became an apprentice engraver and went on to study at the Royal Academy, where he exhibited in 1780. Blake married Catherine Boucher in 1782 and the following year his first 'illuminated book' Poetical Sketches was printed. Blake's talents in both the visual arts and literature have made him a seminal figure of the Romantic period and he is regarded as one of Britain's greatest poets. He died in 1827.

Whether one enjoys Blake's poetry or not is probably up to individual taste. Still, the poems find a pleasant middleground between being overly cumbersome and completely meaningless, so that's at least one objectiable quality.However, Blake's poems in this book are holistic pieces of art, consisting of the actual writing and pictures surrounding the poems which Blake painted himself. The images are full of symbolism that complements the poems. One can't go without the other. This Penguin Clothbound edition doesn't do Blake's engravings any justice by printing them not only in black and white, but also in really poor quality. As it is, I can't really recommend this version of Songs of Innocence and of Experience to anybody who is just in the slightest sense interested in a historically accurate depiction of Blake's work.

I'm a little disappointed that the beautiful illustrations are in black and white! I would have paid more to get the original coloured ones.

William Blake is one of the giants of poetry. He is often overlooked because of the obliqueness of many of his poems. But this affordable (read: cheap) collection of poems is well worth the price of admission. Most of Blakes most famous and well loved poems are included in this volume. Most of us had to read at least a couple of these poems in school. The Tyger still stands as one of the great poems of the English language. The Fly, The Lamb, Children of a Future Age, London and Ah, Sunflower are all included here. These are some of the most beautiful poems ever written. Even if you struggle to understand the meaning, the sheer beauty and music of the verses can still carry you away. Anyone interested in poetry needs to read these poems. It is among the best ever written.
