Two Medan (Visual) Artists Expressed Life and Culture through "Lipatan Karisma"

The art exhibition of two young Medan (visual) artists, Deppi Tarigan and Yanal Desmond entitled "Lipatan Karisma" in GMKI Building, Jalan Gajah Mada, Medan Friday (12 / 3) shows that the spirit of art in the city known as a "barren land" for art, still remain.

SPIRIT of the two artists worked exclusively incorporated in the arts community "Sahala" is such as a "sarcastic" that artist may exhibit wherever, not only in art gallery, but also may be done in the old room which may not be attractive or artistic if compared with some existing galleries in Medan.

"As young artists, this becomes a serious challenge for us. Every time we wanted to show off our work, the rejection that we have always received with reason 'not satisfactory', "said Yanal.

Even though, the presence of Taman Budaya (Cultural Park Field) as a public area for artists in Medan, according to Yanal and Deppi, so far not yet functioning to make the maximum stretch in the field of art to be excited.

Previously, the two artists intended to hold an exhibition at the building. Unfortunately, the permission they proposed rejected by the reason of convoluted bureaucratic.

"The bureaucracy was very convoluted," said Deppi. When Deppi and Yanall requested permission for the exhibition, the Cultural Park officer asked payment for rent the building.

"We are disappointed that officer of Taman Budaya required us to pay 350 thousand for rent. We say we just agreed rental fee by half, because this show is not for commercial. But still rejected, "said Deppi. "We thought, why should us be asked for payment, rather than building more often empty from art exhibitions, why do not we just content with showing off our work," said Yanal.

Deppi and Yanal said that the attitude of Cultural Park was totally not supports the development of art in Medan. "We think Cultural Park should support us," said Deppi.

“Lipatan Karisma”

Both of Yanal and Deppi are young artists who studied field of art at the State University of Medan. Together with other young artists: Julister Sinurat, Gery Paulandika Tobing, Sri afriani Sinaga, Renjaya Siahaan, Sudarson Hutabarat and Jonnes MS Lungun AKA, they founded the arts community "Sahala" two years ago.

Previously, "Sahala" has exhibited their artwork in several exhibitions in Tondi Gallery, an art gallery that had held visual art exhibitions regularly in Medan, actively. Their work, namely "Post_Anthem", included in the exhibition "Menilik Akar” (Judging by Roots) which was held at the National Gallery Jakarta, May 11 to 31 then. This exhibition presents 99 artists from all 21 provinces of Indonesia.

Now, in this exhibition, Deppi and Yanal showing several works of art departing from the everyday life, culture and contemporary issues. For example, the phenomenon of the Karo traditional music, as considered by Deppi, time after time displaced by instant lifestyle.

This idea poured in a painting on canvas titled "Hilangnya Musik Budaya Karo" (the Losing of Karo Culture Music). "I worry that someday the Karo music would die by a single organ. I think, our culture should be strengthened in a way integrate with the modern lifestyle. No need to leave." Deppi said, explaining the painting's style gravity.

Meanwhile, Desmond Yanal try to explore the issue of "young and old", which often contradictory. He expressed this idea with mixed media work titled "Hidup Lingkaran Hidup" (Living Life Circle) which consists of two works. "I want to show that the parents always felt himself the most powerful, without giving opportunity to the young," said Yanal.

The theme of "Lipatan Karisme" by both is an expression of consistency in the work. Like the book, the more often folded more sharply. "We want to show that we want to keep working (in art for Medan)," said Yanal.

The exhibition was opened by the Medan rapper performance, Ucok Munthe et al still be held until March 24, 2010 presents 12 works of art, both painting and installation arts. (by: Tonggo Simangunsong)
